Where are the Social & Behavioural Sciences collections of Leiden University located?

General

The greater part of the Social sciences collection is located in the Social and Behavioural Sciences Library. The more recent literature, from circa 1995 onwards, can be found almost exclusively in this library. The University Library also owns tens of thousands of volumes in the social science field, but these concern less recent material. The location of an individual title can be traced in the Catalogue.

Collection Social and Behavioural Sciences Library

The collection of the Social Sciences Library is entirely open access. It consists of the following sections (shelfmarks in brackets):  
 

  • Reference works and journals (non-lendable ; shelfmark : F.S.W.)
  • Methodology (shelfmark : F.S.W.)
  • Psychology (PSYCHO)
  • Education (PEDAG.)
  • Political science and Public administration (POLWET)
  • Sociology (SOCIOL)
  • Cultural anthropology (CULTAN)
  • Women and autonomy (VENA)
     
The books are arranged by subject, according to the library’s own classification scheme (available at the library desk, on request). The great majority of  books can be borrowed. Non-lendable categories are: journals, encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks and loose-leaf publications. These are intended for only. Photocopying is possible. Printed journals in the Social and Behavioural Sciences Library are arranged alphabetically, not by subject matter. This applies to both current and bound volumes. The Social and Behavioural Sciences Library has an alphabetical list of its printed journals, with a referral to the shelf where the journal in question is located.   Electronic journals can be found through the Catalogue:   
 
The Social and Behavioural Sciences Library also offers:  

  • A recent acquisitions case
  • A prescribed literature case. These books cannot be borrowed, but in most cases there is second, lendable copy.

Collection University Library

The University Library also owns a social science collection of a considerable size, but this literature is mostly from a less recent date. The collection is located in the closed stacks ; the Central Library has only a modest social science reference collection (circa 1300 volumes), marked in the catalogue as S.PSY. (Reading room Psychology), S.POL. (Reading room Political science), S.ECO. (Reading room Economics), etc. There is no longer any active collection development by the University Library in the field of social science.
