Over 10 000 dissertations available: National Dissertation website

The National Dissertation website was officially opened on Wednesday 13 September 2006. Over 10 000 Dutch dissertations can now be accessed online from a central spot world-wide.

No longer will they be gathering dust in attics or on university bookshelves. Now, everyone can become acquainted with new and sometimes pioneering research in the Netherlands. In other countries, somewhat envious glances are cast upon this initiative, which has not been realised anywhere in the world on a national scale with this many dissertations.
Publicity and characterising
Some 2 500 dissertations appear annualy in the Netherlands, in which young academics present the most recent ideas of certain disciplines. Until now, these research results were hard to find. By making these available on the Internet, both doctoral students and the University can show what is being researched. In this way, not only fellow academics, but also the general public can benefit from this. Making research results available publicly also contributes to the profiling of the Netherlands as a country which is academically visible.
Contribution from Leiden
The dissertations come from all universities in the Netherlands, including Leiden University. The contribution from Leiden specifically includes the last two years, but also contains two disputations by Hugo de Groot.
National programme
The National Dissertation website was developed by the national DARE (Digital Academic REpositories) programme, in which all Dutch universities, a number of academic societies and the SURF foundation have joined forces. The aim is to make the research publications available to everyone, without any restrictions. The website DAREnet has been developed to make these items traceable from a central location. DAREnet has a subset of dissertations under the name of Keur der Wetenschap ('Cream of Science'), which contains the publications of 200 leading academics in the Netherlands. 'Promise of Science', the National Dissertation site, is an addition to this. Now, in addition to the established academics, young, promising researchers will receive special attention.
