Welcome to the world's largest library on Indonesia and the Caribbean
On October 15th, 2014, Leiden University celebrated the development of the world’s largest research library on Indonesia and the Caribbean.
More than 350 interested people from various background backgrounds in politics, education, research and business attended th event. Prominent speakers like novelist Adriaan van Dis, author Elizabeth Pisani and Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Retno L.P. Marsudi, guided the audience through Indonesian history, culture and personal experiences. The audience was introduced to our future plans to develop both a brick-and-mortar and a digital learning centre to present the Asian collections to the world. This major international centre will support research, education and cultural activities. An Indonesia expert showed participants a selection of highlights from the Indonesian collections and current research as displayed in the exhibition Investigating Indonesia. During the network reception were invited to see Asian heritage collections in the Special Collections Reading Room, to imagine the future Asian Library on the University Library rooftop, to browse digital collections and to visit the exhibition ‘Investigating Indonesia’ guided by KITLV researcher Fridus Steijlen.
The development of this Asian Library is a result of the merger between the collections of the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) and the Asian collections of Leiden University Libraries.
