Borrowing books from lockers

Books that you request in the Catalogue and that are held by the University Library will be kept for you in a locker. We keep your requested books for you for three days, books that were reserved will be kept for seven days. If you come to collect the books you must scan your card at a scan point. The locker will open, the book has been lent to you and you can take it out.
How does it work?
More than 600 lockers have been placed to the right of the circulation desk. In these lockers we can place requested books. For you the procedure is very easy: about one hour after you have placed a request, the book will be waiting for you in a locker.
The lockers are integrated with our library systems; this means for example, that books will be lent to you the moment the door of the locker opens. The lockers know which books are yours and how many books you have requested. This integration is unique; Leiden University Library is the first library in the world that will be lending its books in this manner.
Why lockers?
The University Library wants to give you the possibility to collect and return your books without the intervention of library staff. An advantage for you is that you will no longer be dependent on the opening hours of the circulation desk. To make this possible the locker system has been devised.
In three steps to your book (how to collect your books)
  1. Check in which section your book has been placed: look in the Catalogue under ‘my account’ (you can do this from home), or scan your card at a random locker terminal in the University Library.*
  2. Scan your card at the terminal of the section that was indicated (A, B, C or D).
  3. The locker will open, the book has been lent to you, you can take the book out.
* If you scanned your card at the right terminal, the locker will open immediately.
Important
  • Always take all books from the locker, they have already been lent to you.
  • Do not forget your card, you need it to open the locker.|
  • Look in the Catalogue in which section your book is placed, this will prevent that you have to scan your card twice.
Reference books and ILL
Books published after 1800 that are for library use only, still have to be collected from the circulation desk. This also applies to all ILL books. For these requests no locker will be appointed to you.
More questions?
