Leiden’s University Library brings a certified fire extinguishing gas and sprinkler systems into use to optimize the protection of its collections against fire. The sprinkler system has been installed in the stacks. These two underground floors, which cover a total of more than 11,000 square metre, accommodate the general collections. Upon fire alarm, the so-called “pre-action dry pipe” installation pumps water into the pipes with great pressure. Fire detection sets off the sprinklers in immediate vicinity of the fire only, so that possible damage is kept to a minimal part of the collection.
A fire extinguishing gas system has been installed in the special collections vaults. After fire alarm and detection, the system releases gas into the sealed vaults, which causes the oxygen levels to weaken until the fire extinguishes. This method minimizes damage to the valuable and unique collections in the vaults. The system uses the inert Argon gas, which is people- and environment friendly.
Both systems have been installed over the past nine months. Apart form a climate controlled environment for the collections, Leiden University Library has now also taken the necessary measures to fight fire quickly and safely. Moreover, the installations have made it possible to insure the collections.
