- Pioneer in historic cartography
- Johannes Tiberius Bodel Nijenhuis (1797-1872), a pioneer of historical cartography, studied law at Leiden and was affiliated to the publishing house and bookseller S. and J. Luchtmans until they ceased trading in 1848. But his real passion was collecting books, portraits, historical illustrations and, most of all maps, atlases, and topographical prints and illustrations which he collected on his travels.
He left his collection to the Leiden University Library, which also acquired some of his other possessions by differrent means. The exhibition features a selection of books, portraits and maps. Attention is also paid to his research work, often using maps from his own collection. This is what made him a pioneer of historical cartography. The exhibition not only shows what Bodel collected, but also how he collected it and why.
- Selections by master's students
- The maps exhibited in De verzamelingen van Bodel Nijenhuis were selected mainly by master's students of Book and Digital Media Studies ('History of the Book' course). The texts written by the students as an assignment will be published in the exhibition catalogue of the same name, to be sold by the University Library.
- Opening reception
- The exhibition will be officially opened on 6 March at 16.00 hours with two short lectures in the Noordhal of the University Library. If you would like to attend the opening reception, please register with Mr. Martijn Storms, curator of Maps & Atlases, before Friday 29 February.
