Library organisation of Leiden University

Leiden University has a central University Library and a number of decentralised faculty and departmental libraries.

The University Library (UB) has a central function and is also the faculty library for Humanities. Certain departmental libraries of the Faculty of Humanities have a number of decentralised offices. The faculties of Archeology, Law, Social Sciences and Medicine/LUMC have local libraries. The collections of the Faculty of Humanities are spread over a number of locations, the majority of which is located in the University Library.
University Library
The University Library (UB) possesses a large collection of scholarly information, both physical and digital. The focus of the UB is on collections of the humanities. In addition, the University Library also has a number of impressive Special Collections, such as medieval manuscripts, archives, early editions, cards, prints, drawings and photos from the Western as well as the Eastern world. The University Library is also the faculty library for the Faculty of Humanities and -to a large extent- the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts.

The following departmental libraries of the Faculty of Humanities have separate decentralised libraries:

  • Centre for Languages and Cultures of China library
  • Centre for Languages and Cultures of Japan and Korea library
  • Kern Institute Library
  • Department of Art History library (including Department of History and Dutch studies Library) 
Decentralised libraries
The collections of the decentralised faculty libraries concentrate on the field of the faculty in question.

  • The Faculty of Archeology has its own library at Reuvenplaats.
  • The Faculty of Law has the separate Law Library in the Kamerlingh Onnes building. In addition to the general legal collection, the library also owns a number of special collections.
  • The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences has its own library in the Pieter de la Court building.
  • The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has four libraries, three of which are located in the Bio-Sciencepark and one in the centre of Leiden. The Gorlaeus Library in the Bio-Sciencepark is the main office.
  • The Faculty of Medicine gives access to the Walaeus Library in the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). This library is unrelated to Leiden University.
